What do the lower–case letters “cd” stand for?
-
Compact Disk — a disk on which digitally–encoded information is stored which can then be read by a laser beam and transmitted to a play–back system, computer monitor or television set
-
Candela — the SI base unit of luminous intensity (i.e. measurement of light intensity)
-
Corps Diplomatique — the whole body of ambassadors and their staffs accredited to a state
-
All the above
-
Neither a. nor c. — these are properly represented by the capital letters CD
-
Only a.
The right answer is:
e. — Neither a. nor c.
These are properly represented by the capital letters CD.
Why?
Because only candela is represented by the lower–case letters (cd), in proper English, although all three terms use the same letters. To distinguish, abbreviations for compact disks and corps diplomatique use upper–case or capital letters (CD). In popular language, people sometimes mix this up and use lower case letters for compact disks as well.
